Pigeon Telephone is upgrading its legacy copper network to fiber optic infrastructure within its Pigeon telephone exchange area, bringing improved broadband infrastructure to nearly 600 additional underserved and unserved locations through funding from the Michigan Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) Program.
The project will replace aging copper infrastructure with fiber, helping position the network to meet the community’s evolving communications needs. Pigeon Telephone anticipates completing the project well ahead of the program’s four-year completion deadline.
“For more than 118 years, Pigeon Telephone has proudly served the Pigeon community. As technologies have advanced, we have remained steadfast in providing the best services to our customers,” said Barb Main, Director of Pigeon Telephone. “This project represents an important investment in our area’s future, and we look forward to bringing the benefits of fiber infrastructure to homes and businesses within our exchange’s footprint.”
The project is part of Michigan’s statewide effort to expand high-speed internet access through the federal BEAD Program. On Oct. 19, 2026, the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity announced that 23 subgrantees, including Pigeon Telephone, had signed BEAD agreements, moving broadband expansion projects closer to construction.
